The East Kimberley Chamber of Commerce and Industry is set to receive thousands of dollars from a new initiative launched by Horizon Power.

The EKCCI will receive $30,000 as part of the Vibrant Regional Businesses initiative, a community-led program developed by Horizon Power in consultation with eight regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry groups. The program aims to support the post COVID-19 economic recovery of small businesses across regional WA.

Horizon Power chief executive Stephanie Unwin said the new initiative provided the utility with an opportunity to recognise and support the important work the EKCCI undertakes in the community.

“As a regional business that serves and supports families, businesses and communities throughout regional and remote WA it is important we work in partnership with our communities to contribute in ways that are meaningful and practical,” she said.

“We know that our regional business customers have faced very difficult and challenging times as a result of COVID-19, and thanks to the EKCCI team we are delighted to be able to support a number of their upcoming economic recovery projects.”

EKCCI president Steve Sharpe said the funding was timely and much needed.

“Over the past few months our board and small part-time team have worked very hard to support East Kimberley businesses during a very difficult time,” he said.

“To have Horizon Power come on board with this extraordinary level of support is a major boost for East Kimberley businesses, and is evidence of its strong commitment to regional communities.”

While COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the Kimberley Economic Forum, previously sponsored by Horizon Power, thanks to the grant the chamber will now be able to host a smaller East Kimberley focused business expo in conjunction with the Tasting the Kimberley gala dinner.

“We will also be offering East Kimberley businesses a Digital Marketing Health Check which will include access to resources to improve their online presence, as well as establishing a buy local gift card program to encourage tourists and locals to support local businesses,” Mr Sharpe said.
