Gather the cans, bottles and milk cartons because the Containers for Change refund scheme launches on October 1.

South West residents will be able to cash in a 10¢ refund for each eligible container returned to a collection point.

Newton Moore Senior High School is one of the schools in the region taking part in the scheme, with the student leadership committee brainstorming ideas to get students involved.

Year 10 student Keira Dronnow said the school was raising funds for more resources, equipment and prizes for the students.

“We’re planning to hold a competition between factions to get people involved and bring in containers,” she said.

“It’s important for us to do our bit and recycle where we can.”

Bunbury Harvey Regional Council CEO Tony Battersby said the scheme was a great opportunity to make real environmental change when it came to litter.

“It’s also a great opportunity for community and sporting groups to fundraise and we will work with groups to ensure it is seamless for them to return their containers.”

Residents can nominate a group or organisation to donate their refund to by using a code like the one in the photograph above.

Refund points in the South West include Stanley Road Waste Management Facility, Return-It Bunbury, Exchange Depot Picton and Cash4Cans in Capel, Harvey and Collie, among others.
