In a final push to ensure the Kambalda women’s football team has enough players for the coming season, there will be a meet and greet next week to drum up further interest and finalise the team’s numbers.

Past players, new players and those interested in getting involved will gather at Kambalda West Football Oval on Thursday, with the team set to play against Miners Rovers and Kalgoorlie City in this season’s inaugural Goldfields Football League women’s competition.

Previously, Kambalda and Kalgoorlie played in the now dissolved Kalgoorlie-Boulder Female Football League.

GFL commissioner Eshe Christie said the Kambalda team was confident the numbers were there to make a full team.

“This is a push to get everyone together to make sure the numbers are there because at the moment everything is a bit scattered because of how it was all previously run,” she said.

“But the interest is there, so we just need to finalise those numbers, get contact details and everything, but also let the community know that you can still sign up if it is something you have been thinking about.”

Christie said the meet and greet provided a social environment for women to get more information about the team without the pressure of turning up for training.

“There are a lot of women including myself who had never played football before but wanted to get involved and didn’t know how,” she said.

“That was me last year. I had never kicked a football before I turned up at training and it was a lot.

“So this is an easy way for women to reach out without the pressure and see if it is something they might want to do. Even if they don’t want to play, there are heaps of support roles we need to fill.”

Christie said she was excited to see three women’s teams join officially under the GFL, and hoped to one day see a team from every senior club in the city.

“Boulder and Railways have both shown interest, but it is great to have Mines, Kalgoorlie and Kambalda come on board to drive the interest up and get it more known that women can play football because obviously it was a thing since forever that women can’t play football.”

The meet and greet will be at 7pm.
