Kalgoorlie Tri Club launch their season on Sunday with a handicap triathlon at the Goldfields Oasis.

Competitors can choose to do a duathlon or take part in a short-course triathlon (300m swim, 9km ride and 3km run) or long-course triathlon (600m swim, 24km ride and 6km run).

The handicap format works by staggering the start based on competitors’ past results.

Newcomers will be gauged according to their abilities.

Greg Tossel has taken over the reins as club president this season and he said the free come-and-try race was the perfect opportunity for budding triathletes to take the plunge. “There is no shame in swimming a lap and taking a breather,” he said.

“If you want to you can take all the time in the world getting onto your bike and ... during the run it is quite common for even long-term members to walk and run.

“The majority of the people will be racing against themselves and doing it for the challenge and the satisfaction of finishing the race.”

Vice-president David Roberts said the event tied in nicely with the Goldfields Physio Kalgoorlie Women’s Triathlon being held the weekend after and was a perfect opportunity for the club to take on new members.

“Anyone who has not come along before is welcome to come along and enjoy the race for free,” he said.

“All and sundry are welcome so if you’re not a member you are welcome to come along and give it a test run. We would love to have anyone there.

“Don’t wait to get fit to race, come down to get fit because you are never going to feel you are fit enough for it.”

There will be a season launch function at the 3B Botique Bar at 3pm on October 13 and registrations for the race will be at the Goldfields Oasis at 7am on October 14 for a 7.30am start.

Non-members can register for a one-day licence on the day or register for a 14-day trial membership at here.
