Harvey shire residents and business owners have just a few days left to comment on a draft strategy for Harvey’s economic future.

The Shire of Harvey Economic Development Strategy is part of the council’s Community Strategic Plan 2017-2027 and will form a blueprint for economic progress in the shire. Community feedback on the draft strategy closes on Thursday.

Harvey Shire president Paul Gillett said the council has an important role to play in facilitating economic development in its communities and the draft strategy was an important step in that process.

“The strategy is a guiding document to inform decision making in the Shire and identifies key focus areas to support and promote economic development in the region,” he said.

“The strategy aims to strengthen the local economy, which will in turn help to create a diverse range of employment opportunities for local residents and attract people to live and work in the shire,” he said.

Mr Gillett said there could be knock-on effects into other key areas of business and community in the shire.

“There are a range of benefits that will form a stronger local economy which may include improved amenities, services, activities and events,” he said.

As part of its background research for the draft strategy, shire staff reviewed similar strategies developed by other councils in WA, including some from the South West. Mr Gillet said that by working together with other local governments and the State Government in a regional context, the Harvey shire could benefit from other regional economic development projects and initiatives.
