Works to build an undercover netball facility in Kojonup have started with an aim to have the courts ready for next year’s winter season.

The $1.9 million redevelopment of the Kojonup Sports Complex will transform an undercover area featuring four resurfaced netball courts.

Included in the upgrades will be enlarged courts to provide greater run-off area for players as the Shire of Kojonup deemed the current space to be too small.

New lighting will be provided on all four courts. The courts will be multi-marked to provide a space for basketball, tennis, indoor cricket and community market events.

Alongside the centre will be a four-tier all-ages playground which is expected to be completed for early next year.

The new playground will feature an outdoor gym, an embankment slide and a custom-designed ninja course.

Shire sports and recreation officer Emily Sleight said the new centre would provide plenty of possibilities for the community.

“It is fabulous, we are still coming to grips with what the space is going to look like,” she said.

“When you think about it ... we don’t have any other infrastructure that’s anywhere near that size in that town.

“This opens up the Kojonup space for competing in carnivals and hosting regional events. It puts us in the position where we have a high-spec netball centre such as what’s seen in Perth.”

Ms Sleight said the facility would be open to public use at all times. “We are going to treat it as an outdoor space ... it is a high-visibility area and it is going to be fitted with security lighting. This is going to well service the kids who work long hours, it gives them a space all year round to exercise at,” she said.

Kojonup Netball Association vice-president Marika Brown said it was an exciting time for the club with works in progress.

“Considering the state of our courts at the start of the season and the wet winter we have had we have had a really interrupted season as far as training goes,” Ms Brown said.

“The new facility now will help us have a season without interruption which will be great for the development of our club.

“Hosting more games in Kojonup will not only help fundraising efforts at the club but will bring money into our town.”

Ms Brown said the project was brought about largely through the hard work of past and present committee members.

The project, described by the shire as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity”, is one of the main infrastructure projects to come out of the Shire’s 2027+ Smart Possibilities plan.
