Northampton took centre stage on the bowls calendar with the annual running of the Murray Criddle threes earlier this month.

The club’s new synthetic playing surface attracted a bumper field, who were delighted with the way the new green played.

The strong nomination level carried on from a tremendous response earlier this month to both Northampton’s joint opening day and the Star Classic at Denison.

The home side dominated play in ideal conditions.

Star trio Dion Delamotte, Eva Watson and Pauline Forrester claimed the day ahead of clubmates Val Olman, Kaye Burton and Kaye Simkin, with the result determined by a superior shot advantage.

The result meant back-to-back titles for Delamotte and Forrester, who reigned supreme last year with clubmate Margy Simpson.

The combination of Sue Waldon, Angie Stagg and Jan Sheehan completed the podium.

Wonthella’s mixed scroungers afternoon held the day after the Northampton event, attracting an excellent total, with 36 competitors hitting the park ahead of the October start of the 2021 pennant season.

Wayne Brown gained the victory ahead of Chad Greenaway in a great final. Kim Trigwell and the day’s highest scorer, Kelvin Pearce, were next.

Pearce was in fine touch, returning two maximum scores during the qualifiers.

Last week’s winner, Brian Thomas, and Mullewa star Paul Johnson each scored one.

Geraldton and Wonthella have open tournaments in coming weeks with nominations now open.

Geraldton’s annual Harry Stanton fours runs next weekend, closely followed by the Drennan O’Malley pairs on October 3 at Wonthella. Barry Chester was the stand-out at last Friday’s mixed scroungers at Geraldton, with an afternoon high of 58 points, continuing a run of strong form.

A combined delegates meeting is set for tomorrow night at the Geraldton club rooms.

Items on the agenda include the ratification of the heat rule for men’s pennants and several changes to bylaws.
