Talented local photographer Stephen Pidgeon managed to capture the HMAS Sydney II Memorial in the background, while it focuses on the action on the water.

Pidgeon said he took the photo from his dinghy while coach sailing at the Geraldton Yacht Club championship race.

“I wanted a photo with the surf club and HMAS Sydney II Memorial, depicting Geraldton’s summer image,” he said.

Pidgeon is a photographer based in Geraldton, focused on scenic photos around the ocean — and said whether it’s seabirds, seals, boats or sunsets, no doubt you would see him there capturing them.

The photo shows skipper Tony Marsh and Jess Felix crewing, The Geraldton Yacht Club hosts events year-round, celebrating the city’s calm coastal waters and warm sun.

With a focus on watersport, and the blurred background symbolising distant memories of the battles fought on our land, this photo is a great reflection of Australian culture.
