Two women have died and a man remains in hospital following a horror smash in Ludlow on Friday — the second fatal crash on the notorious stretch of Bussell Highway in two weeks.

As major crash investigators continue to work at the scene, police revealed the victims were a 58-year-old woman who was driving a Mitsubishi Lancer and her 51-year-old front passenger.

The blue Lancer was travelling south on the Bussell Highway when it was hit by a Toyota Hilux ute travelling in the opposite direction.

The ute also collided with a Volvo fuel tanker in the accident, which happened at 3.43pm.

Three people in the Hilux — a 54-year-old male driver, and male passengers, aged 40 and 19 — suffered injuries. The 40-year-old passenger was taken by helicopter to Royal Perth Hospital, where he is in a serious but stable condition. The other two were taken by ambulance to Bunbury Hospital.

The tanker driver was uninjured.

A section of the highway between Capel and Busselton is currently undergoing roadworks, with the stretch to be turned into a dual carriageway.

Premier Mark McGowan said the incident was a “terrible tragedy”, adding it was not related to schoolies.

“Clearly we have more West Australians driving around our regional roads than ever before, because people aren’t going on holidays – interstate or overseas,” he said.

“I just urge everyone in an environment where more and more West Australians are holidaying at home, just to be careful on our roads.

“Be safe, be secure, don’t drive tired, don’t drive drunk, don’t speed.

“And if you follow the rules you will be much safer.

“Many of us who are parents are worried about our kids driving cars, so I just urge every young person if you are going down south please do it very safely for schoolies.”

Investigators are appealing for anyone that witnessed the crash, or that saw any of the involved vehicles prior to the accident to contact Crime Stoppers by calling 1800 333 000 or by making a report online.
