A person infected with COVID-19 in Perth has been rushed to intensive care.

The West Australian can reveal the positive COVID case was in hotel quarantine when their condition spiralled earlier on Monday.

The Health Department late on Monday night confirmed the person had been transferred to a metropolitan public hospital, where they remained in the ICU.

It is believed to be the first time in several months since a COVID-positive case in Perth has needed to be taken to the intensive care unit, with one of the most recent being in August when a crew member from the ship Darya Krishna was put on a ventilator in the intensive care unit at Fiona Stanley Hospital.

The man in his 30s survived the virus and was later discharged.

Monday’s hospitalisation comes as WA recorded 13 new cases of COVID-19, including a mysterious carrier in the South West who had been infectious in the community.

The positive South West COVID case, described only as being in the “greater Bunbury region”, is believed to be the first case of community spread in regional WA. WA Health has been unable to link the person to any of the pre-existing clusters.

Of the remaining cases, 10 were linked to the Coolbellup cluster — eight of whom lived in the same household as a positive case and two who were close contacts.

One additional case was recorded from the Safety Bay cluster and the other attended Willagee IGA, which has been named as an exposure site.

WA Health also recorded two separate cases related to interstate or overseas travel.

All cases are now in quarantine and contact tracers are working to determine potential exposure sites.
