Coronavirus crisis: Mark McGowan to speak after SA virus spike

VideoWestern Australia is closing its border to South Australia from 6pm tonight, with Premier Mark McGowan flagging a hard border for all states and territories could be re-introduced.

The State Government is considering tough new control measures after a serious COVID outbreak in Adelaide, with Premier Mark McGowan and Health Minister Roger Cook to speak this afternoon.

Travellers crossing the Nullarbor from South Australia have already been told to return home if they're not prepared to quarantine for two weeks.

Less than 48 hours after reopening its borders, Western Australia has reimposed restrictions for people entering from SA after the state detected a cluster of locally-transmitted COVID-19 cases which has grown to 17.

Mr McGowan said today authorities had moved swiftly to “strengthen our controlled border with South Australia yesterday”.

He is now encouraging SA travellers planning to head to WA to “reconsider their travel”.

“We’re assessing further options based on our expert health advice,” he said.

“I strongly urge anyone about to leave Adelaide for Perth to reconsider their travel. More to come.
