Kirsty Carlsson arrived at court at 5.30am.

“I grew up in Claremont and I was a similar age to the girls who were taken. I worked on Stirling Highway at the time so it was really close to home and mum was afraid of us taking public transport and going out ... so I’ve just followed the case since,” she said.

“We all want justice for the families, but I don’t know how it’s going to go.

“It’s a big day for WA.”

There will no live broadcast of the hearing , instead the court has made arrangements to distribute footage after the hearing has finished.

The hearing stopped traffic in the Perth CBD, with roadworks in progress outside the court building to be halted for the day, and police also considering closing the road entirely.

The families of Ms Spiers, Ms Rimmer and Ms Glennon are expected to be escorted into and out of court, with police liaison officers assigned to them.

Edwards’ living victims — young women he has admitted attacking before his alleged murder spree — will also present, and protected.
