Rising stars make waves at Trigg

Capes grommets have grabbed some of the top honours at the weekend’s competition at Trigg, with Dunsborough juniors flexing their muscles against Margaret River rivals.

Dunsborough’s rising star Maverick Wilson took out the blue-ribbon under-14 boys’ final, ousting some of the State’s hottest young surfers and booking his place at the three-day camp at the Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre.

Wilson used his flashy forehand to post a two-wave total of 12.67 (from a possible 20) to defeat Cruz Sheridan and Okie Fraser from Margaret River.

“I’ve never been to the High Performance Centre before, so I’m pretty stoked to have won today,” Wilson said. In the girls’ under-14 division, Denmark surfer Isi Campbell made the most of tricky afternoon conditions, claiming victory to join Wilson over east.

Judges praised her great weekend surfing, linking multiple manoeuvres with ease.

Campbell took down Augusta young gun Ruby Berry and Margaret River girls Kaleisha Launders and Olive Hardy.

Campbell said she was “stoked” for the trip ahead.

A slight bump in the swell and clean early morning conditions provided the perfect setting for the event finalists, with grommets from across the State ripping into 1-2 feet waves.

Olive Hardy revived herself for a win in the under-12 girls’ section, while Cowaramup’s Taylor Flynn took on all comers to secure the under-10 boys’ final.

Dunsborough’s Lulu Wilson was singled out by judges as another surfer with a bright future after dominating the 10-and-under girls’ final.
