The City of Busselton has been recognised with a national award for achievement in local government.

The City received a highly commended award at this year’s National Awards for Local Government in a virtual ceremony.

The award was in recognition of the Busselton Margaret River Airport Development Project.

Busselton Mayor Grant Henley said the City had nominated the project for the boosting productivity through infrastructure category.

“We were then considered in the overall Australian Local Government Association Annual Industry Excellence Awards along with nine other category winners,” he said.

“We were thrilled to see our hard work over the past five years recognised at the national level.

“This is a strategically important project, not just for the City of Busselton, but for the region and the State.”

Cr Henley said the new airport would continue to encourage regional growth by creating jobs, bringing in additional investment and trade for local suppliers, as well as attracting new business to the region.

“It’s been a long process and we’ve certainly faced some challenges, especially in light of COVID-19,” he said.

“However, we’ve successfully expanded aviation access and capacity into the region.

“This has been a significant achievement for what is a relatively small local government.”

He said the airport development and the accolades the project had received would not have been possible without the support of the State and Federal Governments and the support of neighbouring local governments.

Other WA winners included the Shire of Manjimup, which won the 2020 minister’s award for progressive community leadership for the Manjimup Transformed — Aspirational Leadership project.

The City of Mandurah won the 2020 national award for local government excellence for its Entrepreneurial Capacity Building Program.
