Training is all write

Writing workshops start this weekend as part of the Shire’s efforts to upskill the region’s young people.

Residents aged 18-25 are encouraged to hop on the offer today, with the fortnightly training sessions with author Nicole Sinclair kicking off at the Church Gallery tomorrow morning.

But Shire of Augusta-Margaret River program co-ordinator Katie Taylor said new participants were still encouraged.

“These workshops are designed to encourage participants to develop their skills in a way that becomes really ingrained, and we hope young people who love writing, but aren’t sure where to start, will take this opportunity with both hands,” she said.

The workshops are part of the Shire’s Resilient Innovative Skilled Employed program funded from a $75,000 Lotterywest grant. Sinclair joined the program in partnership with WA’s Centre for Stories.

The 2014 TAG Hungerford award-winner will guide youngsters through exercises to gain new skills and find confidence in their writing.

“Everyone has a story to tell,” she said. “I enjoy helping people learn simple ways to craft their narratives ... and be brave enough to share them with the world.”

The writing workshops would also offer practical training in concise writing suitable for people considering a range of career options.

The workshops start tomorrow running from 9am to 12pm.
