Denmark police say a driver was lucky to survive a rollover on South Coast Highway on Monday, let alone walk away from the wreck without serious injury.

About 6.50am on Monday, a 54-year-old Perth man lost control of his Holden Commodore ute after he overtook another car on South Coast Highway.

The ute rolled several times and made minor contact with a big tree off the road.

The man was taken to Denmark Hospital and stayed overnight for observation, but he was released the next day with no serious injuries.

Police say they have ruled out speed and alcohol as factors in the crash, which happened about 1km west of the Hay River Bridge.

The police investigation into the crash continues.

“He was overtaking a slower vehicle and as he came back into the lane, lost control and rolled several times,” Denmark officer-in-charge Sgt Matt Hartfield said.

“The road was wet at the time after a recent shower.

“He was super-lucky — it could have been two vehicles involved and a much worse outcome.”
