More than 60 players will take to the courts of Emu Point Tennis Club this weekend for the Albany Open

The annual Albany Open tennis tournament will feature more than 60 players from across the region at Emu Point Tennis Club this weekend.

In all, 68 players from Perth, Tenterden, Kojonup, Katanning, Dumbleyung, Merredin, Lake Grace and Albany will hit the courts in the two-day competition with entry numbers marginally down on last year.

Women and men’s A-grade and B-grade doubles will be played on Saturday before mixed doubles A-grade and B-grade will be contested on Sunday.

Round robin games will be played for 30 minutes in duration with teams ranked and the finalists determined by total games won across the day.

Tournament chair Greg Cook said the event was shaping up to be a good one.

“We are really looking forward to the event, I have been involved for 20 years and it’s a great event,” Cook said.

“We are expecting lots of closely contested games with very good players across both days.

“It looks like being good weather so it will be a good showcase and hopefully we can get a good crowd to come watch.”

The dominant duo of Alexandra Riggall and Clare King are the defending champions in the women’s A-grade competition.

Sam Graham and Nelson Stanborough claimed the men’s A-grade doubles title last year while Hermiene Tyler and Richard Piggott prevailed in a tight contest in the mixed A-grade doubles.

More than $2500 in prize money is on offer at the tournament.
