Albany’s Chester Pass Road roundabout will be closed for upgrades every night for almost two weeks next month.

The roundabout is the main entrance into the Albany CBD from Albany Highway, South Coast Highway and Chester Pass Road.

It will be closed from 6pm to 6am from May 2 to May 14.

Main Roads WA estimates that 50,000 vehicles use the Chester Pass Road roundabout every day.

But they say about 90 per cent of those vehicles use it from 6am to 6pm.

Main Roads WA spokesman Dean Roberts said the roundabout would be closed for asphalt resurfacing work.

“The work involves removing the existing asphalt pavement, placing new layers of asphalt and reinstating line marking,” he said.

“Replacement of the existing asphalt pavement is required as it has reached the end of its serviceable life.

“These works will improve the road surface and extend the life of the road pavement, reducing the occurrence of pavement defects.”

Light vehicle traffic will be redirected but heavy haulage drivers will need to use the Main Roads WA website to find routes suited to their vehicle’s road rating.

Mr Roberts said the night closures were the best solution.

“A number of options were explored, however undertaking these works with a full closure of the roundabout during the evening limits the impact on all road users and ensures the safety of road users and road workers,” he said.
