Albany’s FOGO service will begin on July 26, marking a big change to the City’s rubbish collection schedule.

City of Albany staff have been replacing household bin lids since May, ensuring every home has a yellow bin for recycling, a red one for general waste and a green one for organic matter, with a kitchen caddy to collect food scraps.

Food scraps, garden prunings and other organic materials will go in the green-lidded food organics and garden organics bin to be diverted from landfill and made into compost.

The program aims to prevent about 30 per cent of the City’s general waste from rotting in landfill and creating harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

All three household bins will be collected on a fortnightly schedule from July 26.

FOGO and general waste will be collected one week, and recycling on the alternate week.

Additional weekly collections of FOGO bins will be carried out over eight weeks in summer.

City chief executive Andrew Sharpe said the community needed to be aware of changes to the bin collections schedule before FOGO started.

“We have been working very hard behind the scenes to ensure all the necessary approvals are in place for our FOGO waste to be collected and processed,” he said.

“Our staff have spent a lot of time engaging with the community to help residents transition to the new system.”
