Hyundai’s luxury offshoot Genesis has unveiled its first electric vehicle with the Electrified G80, which is due to arrive in Australia early next year.

The large sedan broke cover at the Shanghai Auto Show and offers a range in excess of 500km based on the NEDC standard.

The roof features a solar panel to generate further energy.

The Electrified G80 (imaginative!) has a motor at the front and rear, which combined offer a healthy 272kW and 700Nm which is good for a claimed 4.9-second 0-100km/h dash.

Though only available with all-wheel-drive configuration, the drive shaft can be automatically connected or disconnected based on various driving conditions and drive modes to allow switching between 2WD and AWD.

It has a 400V/800V charging system, which allows owners to use various charging infrastructure — including 800V rapid charging systems without an additional converter.

It also features vehicle to load, meaning it can power electric appliances outside of the vehicle.

EVs are already quiet, but to further enhance the in-cabin ambience the Electrified G80 uses four sensors and six microphones inside the vehicle to detect road noise and then offset it by creating sounds at opposite phase.

The suspension also uses a front camera and the sat nav to adjust on the fly for maximum comfort.

Design-wise, Genesis’ signature “Crest Grille” has been made more aerodynamic and has an inverted G-Matrix pattern.

The charging door is in the grille’s upper right corner but is invisible when closed.

Inside is an abundance of recycled materials, including pieces of wood taken from the furniture manufacturing process.

Genesis global head Jay Chang said the Electrified G80’s unveiling was a big moment for the brand.

“Today is very special because it represents a variety of firsts for the Genesis brand,” he said.

“Not only because this is Genesis’ very first appearance at the Auto Shanghai, but it is also the first time we are unveiling a new product outside of Korea.

“The Electrified G80, the perfect balance of athleticism and elegance, marks the beginning of our journey into the EV market, representing Genesis in the era of electrification.”
