The Wiggles have topped Triple J's Hottest 100 with their cover of Tame Impala's Elephant.

Saturday's countdown finished with The Wiggles' Like a Version cover of the lead single from the Perth band's 2012 album Lonerism, which mixed in their own classic Fruit Salad from 1994.

The song featured current Wiggles members Anthony Field, Lachy Gillespie and Simon Pryce, alongside the recently retired Emma Watkins and the Sydney group's co-founders Jeff Fatt and Murray Cook.

"It's just been unbelievable," Field said on ABC radio after the countdown.

"Thank you to all the people that voted and (Tame Impala frontman) Kevin Parker for writing that amazing song.

"We're very honoured to be part of it. It's amazing. This is one of the biggest things that ever happened to us."

Cook later paid tribute to Fatt, his 68-year-old bandmate, who is the oldest winner of the Hottest 100.

"He's the first guy to win the Top 100 that is 100," Field quipped.

The Wiggles famously performed 12 sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City in 2003, but this was their first appearance in the Hottest 100.

Elephant was also the first cover to top the annual countdown.

The annual Hottest 100's top three were rounded out by Stay by Indigenous artist The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber, and Lots of Nothing by Perth garage rock outfit Spacey Jane.
