Perth film house Nocturnal House Productions has signed a 10-year distribution deal for a series chronicling the adventures of a WA photographer.

The Travelling Photographer is billed as a “behind-the-lens expose” of Dan Avila as he travels around the world in search of the perfect shot.

Nocturnal House inked a deal with Britain’s TVF International which will see the program broadcast locally on Foxtel’s National Geographic network.

The pilot episode was completed in Canada late last year and production of the next 12 episodes has started.

Executive producer Jarrod Greenwood said the idea for the series came up “over a few beers” with Avila and his partners.

“Within two weeks our crew was in Canada shooting the pilot episode,” Mr Greenwood said.

“The pilot episode was shot in minus 35C conditions across four days, where ice caves, husky dogs and the northern lights shone a light on what Dan’s profession is really like.

“In most cases, he only has a limited amount of time to get in, get the shot and get out, and this firsthand account of The Travelling Photographer explores the back stories of getting to secret spots and meeting locals who know the area like the back of their hand.

“We wanted to take the viewer on a journey and make them feel part of the four-hour hike in below freezing temperatures, just to capture that one shot.

“This is what makes the series so unique and something we wanted to showcase to the viewer.

“It’s an all-WA team bar one Queenslander we have adopted in the fold.

“It’s important for us through this amazing opportunity to be able to support the local film industry over the next 15 months as we undertake this project.”

Avila said he had always been fascinated by what was involved in getting to “amazing locations to capture that moment in time”.

“I hope the show provides an entertaining and informative look at what it takes to get the image and exactly how any aspiring travel photographer can do the same while showcasing some of the world’s most incredible locations and meeting some amazing people along the way,” he said.

TVF International executive Catriona McNeish said the series came at the right time.

“In today’s digital world, travel photography is increasingly popular,” she said. “We are confident the show will find many international homes.”
